Accommodation Inside Etosha National Park: Complete Guide

Etosha National Park has five NWR-managed accommodation options within the park boundary. All are operated by Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) and range from budget camping to premium chalets. Staying inside gives you immediate access to waterholes and game drives at any time between gate opening and closing.

Okaukuejo Camp

The largest and oldest of Etosha’s camps — Okaukuejo is typically where first-time visitors stay. Its famous floodlit waterhole is one of the best wildlife spots in Africa at night, regularly attracting black rhino, lion, elephant, and giraffe.

  • Accommodation: camping, basic chalets, standard chalets, luxury chalets, bush suites
  • Facilities: restaurant, shop, filling station, pool, floodlit waterhole
  • Best for: First-timers; rhino seekers; families; those wanting a central base

Halali Camp

The smallest of the three main camps, Halali sits in the central zone of Etosha — equidistant between east and west, making it the best base for covering the whole park in 2–3 nights. Its waterhole sits among rocky koppies, creating dramatic sightings at dusk and dawn.

  • Accommodation: camping, chalets, pool suite
  • Facilities: restaurant, shop, pool, floodlit waterhole on rocky outcrop
  • Best for: Route flexibility; lion spotting; travellers doing east-to-west

Namutoni Camp

Built around a restored German colonial fort, Namutoni has the most distinctive architecture of any NWR camp. It anchors the eastern zone, giving access to Fischer’s Pan (flamingos in wet season) and the Chudop/Klein Namutoni waterhole circuit.

  • Accommodation: camping, chalets (various grades), fort rooms
  • Facilities: restaurant, shop, pool, floodlit waterhole
  • Best for: Eastern wildlife; flamingo season (Nov–Mar); travellers entering via Von Lindequist

Dolomite Camp (Premium)

Opened in 2012, Dolomite covers the remote western concession — an area closed to day visitors from other camps. If black rhino is your priority, Dolomite delivers access no other camp can match.

  • Accommodation: Premium chalets only (no camping)
  • Facilities: Restaurant, pool, private waterhole viewing
  • Access: Via Galton Gate from Kamanjab or Ruacana
  • Best for: Rhino seekers; exclusive remote experience; western Namibia circuits

Onkoshi Camp (Premium)

Fifteen stilted chalets on the northeastern edge of the pan — Onkoshi is Etosha’s most photogenic accommodation. The views across the white pan are extraordinary, and flamingo flocks arrive in green season.

  • Accommodation: 15 premium chalets only
  • Facilities: Restaurant, pool, pan-edge viewing deck
  • Access: Via Namutoni camp area; Von Lindequist Gate
  • Best for: Photographers; pan views; eastern circuit; green season visits

Booking Inside Accommodation

  • All NWR camps book through nwr.com.na
  • Dry season (Jun–Oct): book 3–6 months ahead — camps fill fast
  • Shoulder season (Apr–May, Nov): 6–8 weeks typically sufficient
  • Green season (Jan–Mar): 2–4 weeks usually works
  • Pay conservation levy at gate (NAD 180/person + NAD 10/vehicle per day) in addition to accommodation
  • Onkoshi: only 15 chalets; books out earliest — prioritise this one

Key Rules for All Inside Camps

  • Gates open at sunrise and close at sunset — you must be inside by closing time
  • No night driving allowed (only at lit waterholes within camp perimeters)
  • Do not exit your vehicle except in designated areas
  • Braai (BBQ) fires permitted in designated areas only
  • No pets allowed inside the park
