Etosha National Park

How We Work — Independent Etosha Operator Transparency

This page exists because most safari operator websites don't tell you how they actually work. We’re an independent, Namibia-based Etosha specialist. Here is what that means in practice — what we do, what we don't do, what to expect when you book through us, and how we differ from the alternatives.

Who we are

Alux Travel is a Namibia-registered tour operator based in Swakopmund. We focus on Etosha National Park — planning, coordination, and supplier-direct bookings — for self-drive travellers, families, and small private groups. We are not affiliated with Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR), Gondwana Collection, or any single lodge group. Our recommendations are based on what fits your trip, not on where we're tied.

What we do

  • Plan custom Etosha itineraries — gate sequence, camp choice, drive distances, day-by-day game-drive routing.
  • Book NWR rest camps — all six in-park camps (Okaukuejo, Halali, Namutoni, Olifantsrus, Onkoshi, Dolomite) and their campsite annexes.
  • Book outside-park lodges — across the Andersson, Von Lindequist, Galton, and King Nehale gate corridors.
  • Arrange vehicle hire — sedan and 4×4, picked up at Hosea Kutako (WDH) airport or Windhoek city.
  • Coordinate transfers — airport transfers, scheduled charter flights to in-park airstrips.
  • Provide on-trip WhatsApp support — gate-time changes, route advice, supplier escalation if a booking glitches.

What we don't do

  • We don't mark up supplier rates. The price you pay for an NWR camp through us is the same price NWR publishes on their website. The price you pay for a lodge through us is the same price the lodge publishes. You can verify this — we encourage it.
  • We don't run our own vehicles or guides. We work with established Namibian rental and guiding partners. We pick the partner; you book through us; the service is delivered by them.
  • We don't do volume packages. Every itinerary is built for the specific traveller. If we don't think Etosha is the right fit for your dates or group, we'll say so.
  • We don't advise on areas we don't know. Our depth is Etosha and the surrounding northern Namibia region — Damaraland, Waterberg, Caprivi when relevant. For Sossusvlei, Fish River Canyon, or detailed Skeleton Coast logistics we'll refer you to operators who specialise in those.

How we make money

Travel agents in Namibia work on supplier-paid commissions, the same way a flight booking through a travel agent works. The supplier (NWR, lodge, vehicle hire company) pays us a small portion of what you would have paid them directly. You don't pay extra for that — your total is the same as if you booked direct. What you pay for is the coordination: someone handling the NWR booking system that breaks half the time, someone confirming the lodge dates that don't accept online bookings, and someone available on WhatsApp when something changes during your trip.

Why not just book NWR direct?

You can. NWR's online booking system is at nwr.com.na and we always link to it. Direct booking works when:

  • Your trip is one camp, one date range, no add-ons.
  • You've travelled in Namibia before and know the gate logistics.
  • You're comfortable troubleshooting a booking system that occasionally fails mid-transaction.

Direct booking gets harder when:

  • You're combining NWR camps with outside-park lodges — outside lodges don't accept online bookings; you'd need to email each one separately.
  • You want a multi-camp Etosha route and need to coordinate gate timings, drive distances, and arrival hours.
  • You don't know which camp suits your season or interests.
  • You hit the NWR system error at peak season and can't complete the booking.

What to expect when you enquire

  • Reply within 4 working hours on weekdays. Often within 30 minutes via WhatsApp. We aim for <2 hours during business hours.
  • First reply is a question, not a quote. We'll ask about your dates, group size, budget range, and what you actually want to see (rhino? family-friendly? photographer? first-time?). A good itinerary requires this.
  • You'll receive a written itinerary within 24 hours of the second reply. Day-by-day, with cost breakdown, what's included, what isn't.
  • You only commit when you confirm. No commitment until you've reviewed the itinerary. Quote revisions are unlimited.
  • Booking is sequential: NWR camps first (these fill earliest), then outside lodges, then vehicle, then transfers. We hold provisional reservations during the planning phase.
  • Payment is direct to suppliers where possible. Some bookings (NWR specifically) require deposit through us; others can pay supplier-direct via the lodge's own portal. We'll always tell you which is which.

Cancellation and changes

NWR cancellation policy: 7+ days before arrival = 75% refund; 1–6 days = 50%; on day = no refund. Outside-park lodges typically follow similar terms with their own variations. Once your itinerary is built, you can change dates or substitute camps free of charge until 14 days before departure, subject to availability. Refunds beyond that follow the supplier's policy — we don't add cancellation fees on top.
