Etosha Camp Availability by Season

Etosha Camp Availability by Season: Booking Reality Guide

Etosha’s NWR camps operate at dramatically different availability levels throughout the year. Knowing when each camp is under most pressure helps you plan ahead and avoid the mistake of assuming you can book close to your travel date.

Camp-Specific Availability Patterns

Onkoshi (Only 15 Chalets)

  • Books out fastest of all Etosha properties — sometimes 6–8 months ahead for July/August
  • If Onkoshi is on your list: book it first, before anything else
  • Off-peak (Jan–Apr) availability is more comfortable — 4–8 weeks usually sufficient

Dolomite (Premium Western Concession)

  • Less demand than Okaukuejo/Halali due to remote access
  • Still books out in peak season — 3–5 months ahead for July–August
  • Shoulder season (May, Oct): 6–8 weeks typically fine

Okaukuejo (Largest Camp)

  • Highest capacity; most room types; fills across all categories in peak season
  • Budget chalets sell out first — they’re cheapest and most in demand
  • Luxury chalets and bush suites available slightly longer

Halali (Smallest Standard Camp)

  • Limited room inventory fills quickly despite lower profile
  • July–August: book 4–6 months ahead like Okaukuejo
  • Central position makes it popular with repeat visitors who know the park

Namutoni

  • Moderate demand relative to Okaukuejo
  • Fort rooms are unique and book separately — secure these early if wanted
  • Eastern zone is slightly less popular than western, giving more availability

What to Do When Your Preferred Camp Is Full

  • Check NWR website on the 1st of each month — cancellations often release on a monthly cycle
  • Check mid-week — cancellations happen throughout the month
  • Adjust dates by 1–2 days — adjacent dates often have availability when your exact dates don’t
  • Substitute with an outside lodge if all NWR options are exhausted — enter the park on day entry permits
  • Consider the less-popular camp in the same zone (Onkoshi vs Namutoni, Dolomite vs Okaukuejo)

Booking Platform Notes

  • All NWR bookings: nwr.com.na — you must create an account first
  • No third-party booking platforms for NWR camps — only direct booking
  • Payment by Visa/Mastercard online at time of booking
  • Confirmation email is your gate entry document — print it
