About Etosha National Park Guide

This site is a practical planning resource for visitors to Etosha National Park, Namibia. Our goal is to give self-drive travellers accurate, specific, and usable information — not generic travel content.

What This Site Covers

  • Practical planning: Gate times, fees, camp booking strategy, route planning
  • Wildlife guides: Species information, waterhole strategies, seasonal patterns
  • Accommodation reviews: Honest assessments of every Etosha camp and outside lodge option
  • Itinerary templates: Day-by-day routes for 2-night to 7-night stays
  • Cost guides: Realistic budget breakdowns by tier
  • Seasonal information: Month-by-month wildlife conditions

Our Approach

Every guide on this site is written with one principle: tell visitors what they actually need to know to have a successful Etosha safari, not what sounds impressive or generic. That means:

  • Honest trade-off analysis — not just “Etosha is amazing”
  • Specific numbers (distances, fees, drive times) rather than vague approximations
  • Practical recommendations that acknowledge real constraints (budget, time, experience level)
  • Acknowledgement when something is uncertain or subject to change

About Etosha National Park

Etosha National Park covers 22,270 km² of northern Namibia. Proclaimed in 1907, it is one of Africa’s oldest and most important wildlife sanctuaries. The park centres on the Etosha Pan — a 4,800 km² salt flat visible from space — and maintains over 50 waterholes that sustain approximately 114 mammal species, 340+ bird species, and 110 reptile species.

The park is managed by Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) under Namibia’s Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism. Visitor accommodation ranges from basic camping to premium pan-edge chalets.

How We Build These Guides

Our planning team has personally driven every Etosha gate-to-camp route documented on this site, stayed at multiple inside-park rest camps and outside-park lodges across both wet and dry seasons, and helped past travellers plan dozens of custom Etosha itineraries. Every guide on the site reflects this combined first-hand experience plus published authoritative sources, not generic content.

Our Sources

  • Park operational data (gate hours, fees, camp facilities) verified against the official Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) rate sheets and notices.
  • Wildlife status data referenced against the IUCN Red List, BirdLife International, and the work of the Etosha Ecological Institute (EEI) at Okaukuejo.
  • Conservation history sourced from documented colonial-era records (Ordinance 88 of 1907, Ordinance 19 of 1967) and the Etosha National Park Wikipedia article‘s referenced bibliography.
  • Trip experience details (waterhole sightings, road conditions, camp atmosphere) drawn from our planning team’s first-hand visits across multiple seasons.
  • Pricing reflects publicly published NWR rates and lodge rates at time of writing — always confirm directly with the operator before booking.

What We Do Not Do

  • We do not publish sponsored content disguised as editorial.
  • We do not accept payment for favourable lodge reviews or removal of negative information.
  • We are not affiliated with NWR, the Ministry of Environment, or any single lodge group.
  • We do not use stock photography in place of first-hand visit photos where they exist.

Editorial Standards

For our complete editorial framework — including correction handling, sponsored-content disclosure, and update cadence — see our Editorial Policy. Substantive corrections to published articles are logged on the Corrections page.
