Etosha Camp Booking Lead Times by Season

How Far Ahead to Book Etosha Accommodation

Etosha’s Etosha camps fill up predictably — the demand pattern is well-established and booking too late for peak season means choosing between expensive last-minute alternatives or not going at all. This guide tells you exactly how far ahead to book for each season.

Peak Season (June–October)

The dry season is Etosha’s busiest period by a significant margin. International visitors, South African school holiday travellers, and serious wildlife photographers all compete for the same limited chalets and camping sites.

  • Recommended lead time: 6–9 months ahead
  • Okaukuejo premier units and family chalets go first — book these the moment your dates are confirmed
  • Onkoshi and Dolomite fill 6+ months ahead for June–September
  • Camping sites generally available longer, but even these book out in July–August
  • South African school holidays (July, September/October) are the absolute busiest periods

Shoulder Season (April–May, November)

Good game viewing with fewer crowds. Availability is more flexible but growing in popularity.

  • Recommended lead time: 2–4 months ahead
  • Chalets at Okaukuejo and Namutoni available within 6–8 weeks outside public holidays
  • Easter (April) is a busy period — book 4+ months ahead
  • November: availability opens up as international demand drops post-October

Green Season (December–March)

Wet season sees the lowest demand. Availability is much more relaxed but not unlimited — Christmas and New Year are exceptions.

  • Recommended lead time: 4–6 weeks for most dates
  • Christmas (24 Dec–2 Jan): book 3–4 months ahead — many Namibians travel at this time
  • January–March: often bookable within 2 weeks; best last-minute option
  • Onkoshi in January/February: book earlier if flamingo season is your goal
