Etosha Sossusvlei 7-Day Safari

7 Days: Etosha and Sossusvlei Combined

A 7-day Namibia self-drive combining Etosha and Sossusvlei is the most popular itinerary among first-time visitors. It covers Namibia’s two most iconic destinations — big game in the north, dramatic dunes in the south-central desert. Here’s how to structure it efficiently.

Routing Options

Option A: Sossusvlei First (Recommended)

Day Route Overnight
1 Windhoek → Sossusvlei via Rehoboth (360 km) Sesriem camp or nearby lodge
2 Sossusvlei sunrise; Deadvlei; afternoon at dunes Sesriem area
3 Sossusvlei → Windhoek → north to Outjo (500 km) Outjo or nearby
4 Enter Anderson Gate → full western Etosha circuit Okaukuejo
5 Western circuit continued → transfer to Halali Halali
6 Central park + pan rim road → transfer to Namutoni Namutoni
7 Eastern dawn drive; exit Von Lindequist Gate; return Windhoek Windhoek (departure)

Option B: Etosha First

Reverse the order — Etosha Days 1–4, then Sossusvlei Days 5–7. The logistics are identical in reverse. This works better if you’re arriving from the north or want to end near Windhoek airport after Sossusvlei.

Day-by-Day Highlights

Sossusvlei Days

  • Sunrise at Dune 45: The classic pre-dawn climb rewards with light-and-shadow dune photography
  • Deadvlei: Ancient white clay pan with 900-year-old dead camel thorn trees — one of Namibia’s most photographed landscapes
  • Big Daddy / Big Mama dunes: Longest dune climbs; reward with pan views from above
  • Sesriem Canyon: 30-minute walk through a 30-metre deep canyon — good alternative activity

Etosha Days

  • Okaukuejo floodlit waterhole: Black rhino after dark — the unmissable Etosha experience
  • Western circuit: Elephant, lion, zebra, oryx at Ombika, Rietfontein, Sueda
  • Fischer’s Pan: Pan views and flamingos when flooded
  • Eastern plains from Namutoni: Best cheetah habitat in the park
  • NWR night drive: Book immediately on arrival at Okaukuejo

Practical Notes

  • Day 3 is a long driving day (~500 km) — depart Sossusvlei by 08:00
  • Overnight in Outjo makes Day 4 entry to Etosha relaxed and not rushed
  • Sesriem gate (Sossusvlei) has its own gate times — confirm before arrival
  • Total self-drive distance for 7 days: approximately 2,200 km
  • Budget fuel: approximately NAD 2,500–3,500 for the full circuit
