MORE ABOUT ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK NAMIBIA

- EXPLORING THE PARK: WHAT TO EXPECT
Etosha is a vast expanse of wilderness covering an area of 22,270 square kilometres. The park is centred around the Etosha Pan, a large salt flat seen from space. The best way to explore the park is by car, either self-driving or with a guided tour. The park has a well-maintained gravel road network allowing visitors to navigate and discover its wonders.
- SEASONS: THE BEST TIME TO VISIT ETOSHA
The best time to visit the Park is from April to September, when the temperatures are tolerably cool, especially at night. This is also the best time for game viewing, as many animals gather at the waterholes to drink. For bird watching, on the other hand, summer is the best time to visit, as migratory birds flock into the park after the summer rains.
- WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS: A SAFARI EXPERIENCE LIKE NO OTHER
One of the main highlights of Etosha is the opportunity to see a wide variety of wildlife up close. The park is home to four of the Big Five game species, namely elephants, lions, leopards, and rhinos. Visitors can also see other fascinating animals such as hyenas, zebras, giraffes, and antelopes, as well as a variety of bird species. Visitors are advised to exercise caution and follow the park's rules and regulations when viewing wildlife. Some animals are potentially dangerous and can be unpredictable. Always keep a safe distance and avoid disturbing or harassing the animals.
- CAMPING AND ACCOMMODATION: EXPERIENCE THE WILDERNESS
The Park offers a range of accommodation options to suit all budgets and preferences. The park has several campsites, lodges, and resorts located throughout the park. Visitors can choose from self-catering facilities, camping sites, or luxury lodges. Camping in the park is a unique experience that allows visitors to fully immerse themselves in the wilderness. Campsites have basic amenities, such as ablution blocks and cooking facilities, and visitors are responsible for bringing their own camping gear and food.
- WHAT TO DO: ACTIVITIES IN ETOSHA
Etosha is a popular tourist destination in Namibia, with many visitors coming to see the park’s wildlife and participate in activities such as game drives, birdwatching, and photography. There are several rest camps and lodges within the park and several privately owned lodges outside. With 64 waterholes and more than 1,000 km of gravel roads surrounding and connecting them, it can be a daunting place for the visitor that wants to view as much of the prolific wildlife as possible during a (usually) short stay.
- WHERE IS ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK
Etosha National Park is 415km by road, a 4 to 5-hour drive north of Windhoek, the capital of Namibia and the gateway for most international flights. Driving is effortless on the road from Windhoek to Etosha. Entrance to Etosha National Park is via one of 3 gates, Andersson Gate in the south, Galton Gate in the west, or Namutoni Gate in the east. The entrance and camp gates open at sunrise and close at sunset, as the exact times differ from one season to the next.
- CONCLUSION: A WILDLIFE SANCTUARY UNLIKE ANY OTHER
Etosha National Park is a spectacular wildlife sanctuary that offers visitors an unforgettable safari experience. With its diverse range of wildlife, stunning landscapes, and unique camping and accommodation options, it's no surprise that the park is one of Namibia's most popular tourist destinations. Etosha Planning FAQ

What’s the best time to visit Etosha?

Etosha is excellent year‑round, but wildlife viewing peaks in the dry season (May–October) when animals gather at waterholes. For trip timing and seasonal tips, see our best time to visit Etosha guide and match it to your travel style.

Should we do a self‑drive or a guided safari?

Self‑drive offers flexibility and budget control, while guided drives add expert tracking and reduced navigation stress. If you’re weighing comfort vs. independence, compare the pros/cons in Self‑Drive vs Guided Safari before you book.

How many days do we need in Etosha?

Three days is the minimum to see multiple regions and key waterholes, while 4–6 days allows a more relaxed pace and better wildlife odds. Our 3‑day explorer package and Plan My Safari page help you pick a length.

Where should we stay inside the park?

Popular options include Okaukuejo, Halali, and Namutoni, each near different waterholes and game routes. If you’re choosing based on location or vibe, start with Where to Stay in Etosha or browse all lodges.

Are the park gates open all day?

No—gate hours are fixed and change slightly by season. To avoid delays or fines, plan your routes around the official times. We keep the latest details on the Gate Times and Fees page, along with entry fees and permit notes.

What’s the difference between inside and outside accommodation?

Inside‑park camps give you early/late access and faster drives to waterholes; outside stays can offer more comfort and choice. If you’re unsure, our inside vs outside accommodation guide breaks down the trade‑offs.

Which waterholes are best for wildlife?

Waterhole activity shifts by season, but Okaukuejo and Halali areas are reliably productive. For planning your daily routes, check our Etosha waterhole guide and use it alongside your camp location.
