Etosha Fuel and Distance Planning for Self-Drive

Fuel and Distance Planning for a Self-Drive Etosha Safari

No fuel is available inside Etosha National Park. This single fact requires careful planning — both at the stage of preparing for entry and throughout each driving day inside the park. Here is everything you need to know.

Fuel Stations by Gate

Entry GateNearest FuelDistance to Gate
Anderson Gate (west)Outjo108 km
Von Lindequist Gate (east)Tsumeb~75 km
Galton Gate (northwest)Kamanjab~75 km
King Nehale Gate (north)Ondangwa~80 km

Rule: Fill to maximum capacity at the last fuel stop before the gate. Do not enter with less than a full tank.

Fuel Consumption Estimates

  • Standard 2WD sedan on tar: 8–10 L/100 km
  • SUV/4×4 on gravel: 12–15 L/100 km
  • Full circuit (400–500 km) in an SUV: 50–70 litres
  • Most rental vehicles have 55–80 litre tanks
  • Recommendation: Carry a 20-litre jerry can as reserve

Daily Drive Planning

Structure each day around your fuel budget and gate closing time:

  • Know your starting fuel level each morning
  • Calculate maximum safe distance for the day (leave 15% reserve)
  • Factor in slow driving speed: average 20–30 km/h with stops = 100 km takes 3–5 hours
  • Never let the gauge drop below quarter — gravel roads, off-track detours and unexpected waits at sightings add up

If You’re Running Low

  • Camp reception can sometimes arrange emergency jerry cans — ask immediately if concerned
  • Other campers may have spare fuel — ask at camp reception for help connecting
  • NWR rangers patrol the park roads — flag one down in an emergency
  • Driving directly to the nearest gate exit is the safest option if critically low

Jerry Can Advice

  • Approved metal or plastic fuel jerry cans only
  • Store externally (roof rack or external carrier) or in ventilated boot area
  • Never store fuel inside the passenger cabin
  • 20 litres is the practical minimum; 40 litres gives full peace of mind
