Etosha First-Timer Route by Gate Entry

Etosha First-Timer Route by Gate Entry

Your entry gate determines your first night’s camp and the logical direction of your route through the park. This guide gives optimised first-timer routes for each gate.

Entering via Anderson Gate (South — Most Common)

The standard entry for visitors driving from Windhoek. Anderson Gate is 17 km from Okaukuejo and puts you directly into the western zone.

Recommended 3-Night Route

DayActivityNight
Day 1Enter Anderson Gate; drive western circuit (Salvadora, Ozonjuitji m’Bari); evening Okaukuejo waterholeOkaukuejo
Day 2Morning western circuit; midday drive east; arrive Halali; afternoon central circuit (Kapupuhedi, Rietfontein)Halali
Day 3Morning central/eastern circuit; arrive Namutoni; Fischer’s Pan; evening at fortNamutoni
Day 4Morning eastern circuit; exit Von Lindequist Gate

Why This Works

  • Progressive east movement — no backtracking
  • Okaukuejo’s rhino waterhole on night 1 — immediate payoff
  • Natural exit toward Tsumeb/Swakopmund/Sossusvlei

Entering via Von Lindequist Gate (East)

Used by visitors arriving from Tsumeb or flying into northern Namibia. Reverse of the standard route.

Recommended 3-Night Route

DayActivityNight
Day 1Enter Von Lindequist; Fischer’s Pan; Chudop circuitNamutoni
Day 2Morning eastern circuit; drive west to Halali; afternoon central waterholesHalali
Day 3Morning central drive; arrive Okaukuejo; western circuit (Salvadora)Okaukuejo
Day 4Morning drive; night rhino revisit; exit Anderson Gate

Why This Works

  • Saves the Okaukuejo rhino experience for last — builds to a climax
  • Natural exit toward Windhoek or Sossusvlei

Entering via Galton Gate (West)

Used by visitors from Kamanjab or the Ruacana/Kunene region. Provides direct access to the western concession (Dolomite area).

Recommended Route (Dolomite focus)

DayActivityNight
Day 1Enter Galton; western concession circuit; Olifantsbad waterholeDolomite
Day 2Full western concession day — rhino focus; remote waterholesDolomite
Day 3Drive east; Okaukuejo; Salvadora; evening rhino waterholeOkaukuejo
Day 4Continue east to Halali or Namutoni; exit Von LindequistHalali or Namutoni

2-Night First-Timer Route (Any Gate)

If 3 nights isn’t possible, a 2-night trip should base at Halali:

  • Night 1: Halali — morning arrives via Anderson or Von Lindequist; afternoon central circuit
  • Night 2: Halali — full day of drives covering west and east from the central base
  • Halali’s position means you cover more ground than any other camp in a 2-night stay

Common First-Timer Route Mistakes

  • Entering Von Lindequist and exiting Von Lindequist without moving west — misses 60% of the park
  • Staying only at Okaukuejo for 3 nights — misses eastern zone, Namutoni fort, Fischer’s Pan
  • Trying to do a day trip from outside — losing prime morning and evening windows
  • Not matching gate to accommodation direction — booking Namutoni first when entering Anderson Gate forces 148 km immediate transit
