Etosha Camp Location Decision Calculator (Route-First)
Choosing Camps Based on Your Route
The most rational way to choose Etosha camps is route-first: where are you entering, where are you exiting, and how many nights do you have? This calculator maps those inputs to the optimal camp sequence.
Entry Point: Anderson Gate (West)
| Nights | Exit Gate | Optimal Sequence |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Anderson Gate | Okaukuejo × 2 (western deep dive) |
| 2 | Von Lindequist | Okaukuejo → Namutoni (single transit) |
| 3 | Von Lindequist | Okaukuejo → Halali → Namutoni (classic) |
| 4 | Von Lindequist | Okaukuejo × 2 → Halali → Namutoni |
| 5 | Von Lindequist | Okaukuejo × 2 → Halali → Namutoni × 2 |
| 5+ | Any | Add Onkoshi (1–2 nights) for luxury/pan views |
Entry Point: Von Lindequist Gate (East)
| Nights | Exit Gate | Optimal Sequence |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Von Lindequist | Namutoni × 2 (eastern deep dive; cheetah focus) |
| 2 | Anderson Gate | Namutoni → Okaukuejo (single transit; rhino on night 2) |
| 3 | Anderson Gate | Namutoni → Halali → Okaukuejo (reverse classic) |
| 4 | Anderson Gate | Namutoni × 2 → Halali → Okaukuejo |
Decision Factors
When to Stay at the Same Camp Twice
- You want depth over breadth
- You have 2 nights total and don’t want to use one for transit
- Okaukuejo twice is the standard recommendation for short trips — the western circuit is the most productive area
When to Do a Full West-to-East Transit
- You have 3+ nights and want to experience all three camp characters
- You’re entering one gate and exiting the other (most efficient routing)
- You want different wildlife habitats — western lion, central leopard, eastern cheetah
When to Add Onkoshi
- You have 5+ nights AND luxury accommodation is a priority
- Flamingo season (January–March) is your specific goal
- You’re a repeat visitor who has done the main camp circuit
The Non-Negotiable Rule
Whatever your sequence, always include at least one night at Okaukuejo. Its floodlit waterhole is the single most reliable wildlife experience in Etosha — black rhino, lion, elephant after dark from a safe viewing wall. No other camp replicates it.
