Etosha National Park

Etosha Gates, Fees, and Drive Times Planner

Etosha Gates, Fees & Drive Times Planner

How to Use This Planner

Etosha’s gate system determines your entire day. Gates open at sunrise and close at sunset — being on the road after closing time results in a fine. This planner helps you build an itinerary around gate windows rather than map distance, so you arrive at the right waterhole at the right time instead of rushing between camps.

What to Confirm Before Departure

  • Gate opening and closing times for your route direction — these change monthly
  • Valid entry requirements and applicable park fees (payable at the gate)
  • Realistic drive times between gates, camps, and key waterholes
  • Fuel availability — only at Okaukuejo and Namutoni inside the park

Planning Rules

  • Always plan to arrive at your camp with a 30-minute buffer before gate close — wildlife on the road will delay you
  • Keep transfer days short when combining game-viewing and relocation — a day with a 3-hour drive leaves little time for waterholes
  • Do not base timing on map distance alone — 60 km/h speed limit on gravel means 60 km takes a full hour minimum
  • Build your itinerary around gate windows first, then choose camps based on what waterholes you want

Common Planning Errors

  • Entering too late and losing prime morning sighting windows (first 2 hours after gate open are best)
  • Overloading one day with a long transfer and full game drives — choose one or the other
  • Ignoring fuel constraints — if visiting the western zone, plan fuel stops carefully
  • Assuming paved road drive times apply to gravel sections
