How to Get to Etosha from Swakopmund: Transfer Reality, Routing, and First-Night Strategy

How to Get to Etosha from Swakopmund: Routes, Timing, and First-Night Strategy

Swakopmund to Etosha is one of the most popular legs of any Namibia self-drive circuit. The drive is long but mostly straightforward, and the transition from coastal desert to bushveld is dramatic. Here’s how to plan it properly.

Distance and Drive Time Options

Route Distance Drive Time Road Type
Swakopmund → Otjiwarongo → Anderson Gate (via B2 + B1) ~610 km 6.5–7.5 hrs Tarmac throughout
Swakopmund → Omaruru → Outjo → Anderson Gate (via B2 + C36) ~580 km 6–7 hrs Mixed tarmac + good gravel
Swakopmund → Uis → Khorixas → Kamanjab → Galton Gate ~580 km 7–8 hrs Mixed; scenic Damaraland route

Recommended Route: B2 + B1 (Most Reliable)

The standard route goes east on the B2 from Swakopmund to Otjiwarongo, then north on the B1 to Outjo, then west on the C38 to Anderson Gate. This is fully tarmac, well-signposted, and passable in any vehicle.

Key Stops

  • Usakos: 175 km from Swakopmund — fuel and basic supplies
  • Karibib: 210 km — good place for early lunch or coffee break
  • Otjiwarongo: 350 km — major town; good fuel stop; pick up any supplies
  • Outjo: 460 km — last proper town before Etosha; fuel, ATM, Pick n Pay
  • Anderson Gate: 535 km from Swakopmund

The First-Night Strategy Problem

The core challenge: leaving Swakopmund early means you can arrive at Anderson Gate before it closes, but you lose a full morning in Swakopmund. Leaving mid-morning means arriving at Etosha late afternoon with minimal game drive time on arrival day.

Option 1: Drive Full Distance, Enter Late Afternoon

  • Leave Swakopmund by 7 am → arrive Anderson Gate ~2:30–3 pm
  • Enter park immediately; 2–3 hour drive to Okaukuejo with wildlife stops
  • Evening at Okaukuejo waterhole
  • Best for: Those wanting to maximise Etosha time

Option 2: Stop Near Outjo for the Night

  • Leave Swakopmund at a relaxed pace; overnight near Outjo (~3.5 hrs drive)
  • Next day: 1.5 hr drive to Anderson Gate at opening time; full morning game drive
  • Best for: Families; older travellers; those who prefer not to rush

Option 3: Stop at a Lodge Near Anderson Gate

  • Lodges like Ongava or other farm stays are 20–60 km from the gate
  • Overnight; enter Etosha at gate opening the next morning
  • Best for: Premium travellers wanting guided activities on arrival night

What to Prepare Before You Leave Swakopmund

  • Fill fuel tank in Swakopmund before departure
  • Stock up on food and drinks for your Etosha stay (lower prices on coast and in Outjo vs camp shops)
  • Withdraw NAD cash in Swakopmund — Outjo also has ATMs, but don’t rely on it
  • Confirm your NWR booking reference — you’ll need it at Anderson Gate
  • Check gate closing time for the month you’re travelling

Driving Tips for the B2/B1 Route

  • Allow 30–45 minutes for each fuel/food stop — don’t underestimate time
  • The B1 north of Otjiwarongo has occasional livestock on the road — watch speed at dusk
  • Arriving at Anderson Gate within 1 hour of closing risks not reaching camp before dark — aim for 3+ hours buffer
  • Outjo is the last guaranteed fuel stop — fill up even if you don’t need to
