Etosha to Swakopmund: Distance, Drive Time, Route & Fuel Stops

The drive from Etosha (Anderson Gate/Okaukuejo) to Swakopmund is approximately 580 km and takes 7 hours including one or two short stops. The most common route runs south-west via Outjo, Khorixas, Uis and the coastal C35, passing through Damaraland scenery. A one-night stop in Damaraland (near the Brandberg or at a conservancy lodge) is the standard way to split the journey.

Route options

Route A: Via Outjo & Khorixas (recommended)

Okaukuejo (Anderson Gate) → C38 south to Outjo (100 km, 1h15) → C39 west to Khorixas (140 km, 2h) → D2612 south to Uis (120 km, 1h45) → C35 south to Henties Bay (160 km, 2h) → coast road south to Swakopmund (70 km, 45 min). Total: 580 km, 7h driving. Mostly tarred and well-maintained gravel.

Route B: Via Otjiwarongo (longer, all-tar)

Okaukuejo → Otjiwarongo via B1 → Omaruru → Karibib → Usakos → Swakopmund. Total: 720 km, 8 hours, all-tarred if road condition is a concern.

Fuel stops

Reliable fuel: Outjo (100 km from Okaukuejo), Khorixas (240 km), Uis (360 km), Henties Bay (520 km). Top up at each — Damaraland stretches have long distances between services.

Where to overnight

Popular mid-route stops: Damaraland Camp (Wilderness Safaris, near Palmwag), Twyfelfontein Country Lodge (near rock-engraving World Heritage Site), Mowani Mountain Camp, Vingerklip Lodge. Also Brandberg White Lady Lodge near Uis for those continuing the same day.

Road conditions

Tarred from Etosha to Khorixas via C38/C39, then excellent gravel thereafter. During the wet season (January-March), the D2612 and C35 can have washaways — check with your lodge before departing.

When to drive

Start early (06:00-07:00) to enjoy cooler driving temperatures and morning light. Arrive in Swakopmund before dusk; the C35 coastal stretch is prone to fog and reduced visibility.

Alternative: fly

Scheduled small-aircraft flights connect Etosha (Ongava/Mokuti airstrips) to Walvis Bay Airport (30 min drive from Swakopmund). Flight time 1h 15min.
