Etosha National Park

Etosha Cell Coverage & Wi-Fi: Connectivity Guide for Visitors

Mobile coverage inside Etosha is limited to the three main rest camps (Okaukuejo, Halali, Namutoni) with reliable MTC 4G signal. Outside the camps and on the road network, expect no reception for the majority of your day. All three main camps also offer paid Wi-Fi vouchers at reception (roughly NAD 50 for 1 GB, rates vary). Download offline maps, booking confirmations and podcasts before entry.

Network by camp

  • Okaukuejo: MTC 4G reliable, TN (Telecom Namibia) 4G reliable. Wi-Fi at reception (paid).
  • Halali: MTC 4G reliable within camp. Wi-Fi at reception (paid).
  • Namutoni: MTC 4G reliable within camp. Wi-Fi at reception (paid).
  • Onkoshi: Satellite Wi-Fi only, restricted to lodge lounge.
  • Dolomite: Patchy MTC 3G/4G at camp. Satellite Wi-Fi available.
  • Olifantsrus: No coverage. Emergency satellite radio only.
  • Waterholes and road network: No coverage anywhere.

Which SIM to buy

MTC (Mobile Telecommunications) has the widest coverage in northern Namibia. Buy a prepaid SIM at Hosea Kutako Airport on arrival (~NAD 30 SIM, plus data bundles from NAD 100 for 1 GB). TN is fine for Etosha but weaker elsewhere in Namibia.

Roaming alternative

International roaming is expensive. If you plan to stay online, a local MTC SIM is overwhelmingly cheaper.

What to download before entering

  • Maps.me or Organic Maps offline map packs for northern Namibia.
  • Google Maps offline region for Etosha + surrounding roads.
  • Merlin Bird ID southern Africa pack (for birding without coverage).
  • Your booking confirmation emails and NWR permit screenshots.
  • Audio: podcasts and music for the long dusty drives.

Emergencies

If you need help in the bush (flat tyre, mechanical problem), NWR vehicles patrol the main routes several times daily. Flag them down. All camps have 24-hour radio to park HQ for medical emergencies. Leave a written itinerary with camp reception so your absence is noticed if you fail to return.

Power for devices

All NWR chalets have 220V (South African type M three-round-pin) outlets. Bring a universal adapter. Vehicle charging (12V/USB) is essential for long days away from camp. Solar power banks are useful for Olifantsrus campers.
