Best Etosha Camps by Gate Zone
Best Etosha Camps by Gate Zone
Choosing the right camp for your entry gate eliminates wasted transit time and maximises your first and last game drive windows. This guide matches camps to gate zones with honest assessments for each pairing.
Anderson Gate (South) → Western Zone Camps
Okaukuejo — Primary Choice
- Distance from gate: 17 km (20–30 min)
- Why it’s the best first camp: Arrive through the gate and you’re at camp within 30 minutes, with the entire afternoon for game driving
- Wildlife advantage: Western circuit (Salvadora, Ozonjuitji m’Bari) is immediately accessible; floodlit rhino waterhole that evening
- Facilities: Largest NWR camp; pool, restaurant, shop, petrol
Dolomite — Premium Alternative
- Access: Galton Gate (west), not Anderson Gate — different approach road from Kamanjab
- If entering Anderson Gate heading to Dolomite: ~95 km drive; plan accordingly
- Best for: Western concession rhino focus; visitors who have already done the standard western circuit
Von Lindequist Gate (East) → Eastern Zone Camps
Namutoni — Primary Choice
- Distance from gate: 17 km (20–30 min)
- Why it’s right for this gate: Mirror of the Anderson/Okaukuejo logic — immediate access, afternoon drive available
- Wildlife advantage: Fischer’s Pan flamingo (wet season); eastern waterhole circuit; historic fort experience
- Facilities: Pool, restaurant, shop; fort rooms available
Onkoshi — Premium Eastern Alternative
- Distance from Von Lindequist: ~35 km via Namutoni area
- Best for: Pan-edge photography; wet season flamingo; premium accommodation seekers
- Book first: Only 15 chalets — most limited inventory in the park
Galton Gate (West) → Western Concession
Dolomite — Only Option
- Distance from gate: Access road to western concession
- Why it works: The only camp that covers the western concession exclusively
- Wildlife advantage: Highest black rhino density in park; exclusive roads with minimal other traffic
- Note: Premium tier only; no camping or budget options
Central Zone Access — Halali
Halali is not directly adjacent to any gate but serves as the strategic hub for visitors doing a multi-camp route. It’s the best single base for 2-night visitors who want maximum park coverage.
- From Anderson Gate: 91 km (via Okaukuejo and westward drive); plan as a Day 2 camp
- From Von Lindequist Gate: 91 km; plan as Day 2 camp in reverse route
- Best for: Central circuit driving; 2-night visitors wanting maximum range
