  • From: NAD 29,790 per person sharing, all-inclusive (2026)
  • Mandatory levy: Rhino Conservation Levy NAD 275 per person per night, billed separately
  • Best for: Couples, photographers and small private groups who want the most exclusive camp on the Onguma reserve

Onguma Camp Kala is the flagship of the Onguma Nature Reserve — four open-plan suites raised on wooden stilts above one of the reserve’s most prolific waterholes, linked by raised walkways to a main area whose central tower is shaped like a termite hill. It stands on the site of the former Tree Top Camp, which was destroyed by fire in 2020; Kala opened in its place in late 2022 and was named on the Condé Nast Traveller Hot List in 2023.

This is the top of the Onguma range by a clear margin. Where Bush Camp and Forest Camp are comfortable safari lodges, Kala is a full luxury camp: butler service, an all-day pantry off a show kitchen, a gym, a yoga deck, a spa, and an air-conditioned photographic hide built below the main deck at waterhole level.

Why stay at Onguma Camp Kala

  • The waterhole, from every angle. The suites, the fire-pit deck and the below-deck photographic hide all face the same floodlit, prolific waterhole — you can photograph game at eye level without leaving camp.
  • Private decks that are actually private. Each suite has its own shaded sala with a king-size daybed, a wood-fired hot tub and a plunge pool.
  • Genuinely all-inclusive. The rate covers all meals, selected drinks including your suite’s personal bar, two scheduled activities per night stayed, one 60-minute spa treatment per person, and airstrip transfers.
  • Etosha on the doorstep, a private reserve after hours. Von Lindequist Gate is minutes from the reserve entrance, and when the park closes you carry on with night drives and bush walks on 35,970 private hectares.

Accommodation at Onguma Camp Kala

The four suites are open-plan, air-conditioned (with an evening breeze system), and configured with king or twin beds. Each has double vanities, a free-standing full-size bathtub, a shower with waterhole views, a full personal bar, and that private deck with sala, hot tub and plunge pool. The camp takes a maximum of eight adults; a dedicated guide room is available for private guides (NAD 3,200 per guide per night).

Because the camp is unfenced, children under 12 are not accepted — unless the entire camp is reserved for sole use, in which case up to 8 adults and 2 children can travel together.

A termite tower above the waterhole

Kala’s main building is the most photographed piece of architecture on the reserve: a central tower modelled on a termite mound, designed by Nick Plewman Architects with interiors by Fox Browne Creative. Dinner comes from an open show kitchen, the cocktail bar and lounge open onto the fire-pit deck, and the whole structure is oriented so that sundowners, meals and quiet hours all happen facing the water.

Activities from Onguma Camp Kala

  • Private game drives on the Onguma reserve — lion and cheetah are regularly encountered, and Onguma has been an official Black Rhino Custodian with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism since 2003.
  • Guided Etosha excursions through Von Lindequist Gate into the Namutoni and Fischer’s Pan circuits of the park.
  • Guided bush walks with the camp’s guides.
  • The Onkolo Hide — Onguma’s sunken photographic hide, built below ground level at eye height with one of the reserve’s busiest waterholes.

The all-inclusive rate covers two scheduled activities per night of your stay.

Who Onguma Camp Kala suits

Kala is built for couples and photographers who want eastern Etosha’s most exclusive base, and for small groups of friends or multi-generation families (with the sole-use option) who want a private camp entirely to themselves. If the rate is beyond the trip budget, the honest alternatives on the same reserve are Onguma The Fort for drama at roughly a third of the price, or Bush Camp and Forest Camp for classic lodge comfort.

Getting to Onguma Camp Kala

From the east side of Etosha, the Onguma reserve entrance is 500 m from Von Lindequist Gate on the Namutoni road; the camp is a short drive inside the reserve on good natural bush roads. Self-drivers coming from Tsumeb approach on the B1/C38 via the eastern gate; fly-in guests use the Mokuti or Onguma airstrips, with transfers included in the rate. Namutoni Camp inside the park is the nearest NWR camp, just beyond the gate.

Frequently asked questions about Onguma Camp Kala

What happened to Onguma Tree Top Camp?

Tree Top Camp — a four-room stilted camp above the same waterhole — was destroyed by fire in 2020 and no longer operates. Onguma built Camp Kala on its former site, opening in late 2022. If you are searching for Tree Top Camp, Kala is its successor: the same elevated position and waterhole, rebuilt as a far more luxurious four-suite camp. Any site still selling Tree Top Camp as a bookable lodge is out of date.

How far is Camp Kala from Etosha National Park?

The Onguma reserve borders Etosha’s eastern boundary, with the reserve entrance 500 m from Von Lindequist Gate. Guided Etosha excursions enter the park through that gate, and self-drivers can be inside Etosha within minutes of leaving the reserve.

Are children allowed at Camp Kala?

The camp is unfenced, so children under 12 are not accepted on normal bookings. The exception is sole use: when the whole camp is reserved, it accommodates up to 8 adults and 2 children.

What does the all-inclusive rate include?

Accommodation, all meals, selected drinks including your personal bar, two scheduled activities per night stayed, one 60-minute spa treatment per person, and airstrip transfers. The NAD 275 per-person-per-night Rhino Conservation Levy is billed separately, and premium drinks, extra spa treatments and gratuities are excluded.

How far in advance should I book?

With only four suites, Kala sells out well ahead in the July–October dry season — 9 to 12 months ahead is realistic for those months, and sole-use bookings need even more lead time. Shoulder-season dates are more flexible.
