Etosha National Park

Etosha from Windhoek: Route, Drive Time, Fuel Stops (2026)

Windhoek to Etosha is the standard arrival route for international visitors. Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) sits 45 km east of Windhoek city centre; the closest Etosha gate is Andersson Gate, 440 km north on tarred B1 + C38 highways. Allow 5 hours of driving direct, 6 hours with fuel and meal stops. This guide covers the route, fuel stops, drive times, alternatives, and what to book before you set off.

The standard route: WDH to Andersson Gate

  • WDH airport → Windhoek city: 45 km, B6 west, 35 minutes. Fuel up here if your rental tank isn’t full.
  • Windhoek → Okahandja: 70 km, B1 north, 50 minutes. Crafts market on the right exit if you have time.
  • Okahandja → Otjiwarongo: 175 km, B1 north, 2 hours. Halfway fuel stop. Restaurant choices in Otjiwarongo are decent.
  • Otjiwarongo → Outjo: 70 km, C38 northwest, 50 minutes. Last well-stocked supermarket before the park — load water, snacks, ice.
  • Outjo → Andersson Gate: 110 km, C38 north, 1.25 hours. Tarred all the way; gravel sections only after the gate.

Total: 470 km, 5 hours drive, 6 hours with stops. Done in one day comfortably if you depart Windhoek by 09:00 and aim to be at the gate before 16:00 (gates close at sunset; check seasonal closing times for your travel month).

Inside the park, Okaukuejo Resort and Halali Resort have small fuel stations; hours are limited (typically 07:00–19:00). A full tank from Outjo will easily reach Okaukuejo with reserve.

Alternative arrival options

Fly-in: Eros Airport → in-park airstrip

Charter operators (Wilderness Air, Scenic Air) fly daily from Eros (ERS, the Windhoek city airport) to Ondangwa, Mokuti, and direct to NWR airstrips at Onkoshi or Halali. Roughly 90 minutes flight time vs 5 hours drive. Rates from NAD 4,500 per person one-way for shared charters; NAD 12,000+ for private. Best for guests on tight timelines or photographers wanting to maximise game-drive hours.

Different gate: Von Lindequist Gate (eastern)

If your itinerary starts at Namutoni or Onkoshi (eastern Etosha), Von Lindequist Gate is the entry point. Route from Windhoek: B1 to Otjiwarongo → C38 to Outjo → B1 to Tsumeb (320 km from WDH) → B1/C38 to gate (440 km total). Slightly longer than Andersson but more direct for east-park trips.

Different gate: King Nehale (north)

King Nehale Gate access requires a 600+ km drive via Tsumeb → Ondangwa → back south. Niche use case; only relevant if combining Etosha with Owambo region travel.

Vehicle requirements

The Windhoek → Etosha route is fully tarred. Any sedan rental (VW Polo class up) is fine on the highway. Inside the park, gravel roads are well-graded and navigable in a sedan during dry season (May–October). For wet-season visits (November–April), or if your trip includes Dolomite Resort (western Etosha), book a 4×4. Standard Toyota Hilux or Fortuner double-cab is the local default.

Departure timing — what works

  • Land at WDH morning, drive same day: only if your flight lands before 11:00 and your first night is at Andersson Gate side (Okaukuejo or outside-park lodge). Tight but doable.
  • Land at WDH evening, overnight Windhoek: recommended. Stay at a Windhoek B&B near WDH or in town, drive next morning fresh. You’ll arrive Etosha by mid-afternoon with time for the first afternoon game drive.
  • Multi-stop route: add Erindi Private Game Reserve or Waterberg Plateau between WDH and Etosha for a 2-night break in the drive.

Costs — rough guide

  • Sedan rental: NAD 750–1,200 per day (low/peak)
  • 4×4 rental: NAD 1,400–2,200 per day
  • Fuel for round-trip drive (sedan): NAD 900–1,200
  • Fuel for round-trip drive (4×4): NAD 1,400–1,800
  • Park entry per international adult: NAD 280/day
  • Vehicle entry: NAD 120/day for foreign-registered vehicle
