Etosha Entry Gates: Which Gate Should You Use?
Choosing the Right Etosha Entry Gate
Etosha has four entry gates, each serving a different part of the park and accessed from different directions. Most visitors use one of two main gates — Anderson or Von Lindequist. Here’s how to choose.
Anderson Gate (West) — The Standard Choice
Anderson Gate is the most commonly used entry point for visitors arriving from Windhoek. It sits on the southern boundary of western Etosha and leads directly to Okaukuejo camp (17 km on tar road).
- Approach: B1 north from Windhoek → Otjiwarongo → C38 toward Outjo → C38 to gate
- Distance from Windhoek: ~430 km (5 hours)
- Last fuel: Outjo, 108 km before the gate — fill up here
- Best for: Most visitors; logical if starting a west-to-east circuit; closest to Okaukuejo
Von Lindequist Gate (East) — The Eastern Approach
Von Lindequist Gate (also called Namutoni Gate) is the entry point for eastern Etosha, leading to Namutoni camp (10 km). Use this gate if approaching from Tsumeb, Grootfontein or the Caprivi direction, or if doing an east-to-west circuit.
- Approach: B1 north from Windhoek → Tsumeb → C38 south to gate
- Distance from Windhoek: ~525 km (5.5 hours)
- Last fuel: Tsumeb, ~75 km before the gate
- Best for: Visitors from the north/northeast; east-to-west circuits; cheetah-focused first days
Galton Gate (Northwest) — Dolomite Only
Galton Gate provides exclusive access to the western section of Etosha and Dolomite Camp. It is not connected to the main park road network — visitors entering here must be booked at Dolomite Camp and must do guided drives only (no self-drive in the western zone).
- Approach: Via Kamanjab from Outjo or Damaraland direction
- Best for: Dolomite Camp guests only
King Nehale Gate (North) — Remote Entry
The least-used gate, on the northern boundary. Used by visitors arriving from Ondangwa, Oshakati or the Caprivi Strip who want to enter from the north. The road from this gate to the main camps is a longer drive through remote, less-visited northern Etosha.
- Best for: Visitors from northern Namibia or those wanting to explore the remote northern section
Gate Selection Decision Tree

| Doing a loop (enter one gate, exit the other) | Anderson in, Von Lindequist out (west-to-east) |
| Booked at Dolomite Camp | Galton Gate |
| Arriving from Ondangwa / northern Namibia | King Nehale Gate |
