Okaukuejo: The First-Timer’s Natural Home
Okaukuejo is where most first-time Etosha visitors stay — and for good reason. It’s the closest camp to the main entrance, has the best facilities, and its floodlit waterhole delivers the most reliable black rhino sightings of any point in the park. The western waterhole circuit (Salvadora, Ozonjuitji m’Bari, Moringa) is also the richest zone for lion and general game density.
Book if: You want maximum facilities, the best rhino viewing, and the most straightforward entry experience.
Halali: The Strategist’s Choice
Halali’s central position is its superpower. From here, you can reach western waterholes (Rietfontein, Gemsbokvlakte) and eastern waterholes (Goas, Chudop) in a single day without excessive driving. If you only have 2 nights, Halali maximises your coverage more than any other camp. Its rocky koppie setting also makes it more visually distinctive than the flat bush around Okaukuejo.
Book if: You want maximum coverage of the park in minimal nights; you’ve already seen the western zone; or you prefer a quieter camp atmosphere.
Namutoni: The Character Camp
Namutoni’s German colonial fort is unique in Africa — you can stay in rooms within the fort walls. The eastern zone has a different character from the west: more mopane woodland, Fischer’s Pan for flamingos, and slightly less visitor pressure. Namutoni is ideal as a closer to a west-to-east route, or as the base for visitors with a specific eastern zone focus.
Book if: History and architecture interest you; you’re visiting in wet season (flamingo priority); you’re exiting via Von Lindequist Gate; or you want a quieter camp with good facilities.
The Best Answer: All Three
A 3-night route using one night at each camp is Etosha’s classic itinerary for good reason — it gives you every zone, every waterhole character, and every camp’s distinct atmosphere. If you have to choose just one: Halali provides the best value for a limited-night trip due to its central positioning. If rhino is the priority: Okaukuejo, no contest.
