Etosha Waterhole Priority Planner by Route Window

Not all waterholes are equally worth visiting for every time of day or camp position. This planner helps you decide which holes to target based on where you are and how much time you have.

By Time Available

If You Have 2 Hours

  • Go to the closest Tier 1 waterhole from your camp and stay there
  • Okaukuejo: Salvadora (22 km; 40 min drive = 1hr 20min at waterhole)
  • Halali: Kapupuhedi (8 km; 15 min drive = 1hr 30min at waterhole)
  • Namutoni: Fischer’s Pan or Chudop

If You Have 4 Hours

  • A loop covering 2–3 waterholes works well in this window
  • Standard: 30–45 min at each hole + transit between = 4 hour loop
  • Prioritise the waterhole with freshest activity signs first

If You Have a Full Day

  • Morning circuit (3–4 hours): highest-value holes near camp
  • Midday: return to camp or extended drive to a remote hole
  • Afternoon circuit (2.5 hours): focus on where prey herds are moving in the heat reduction
  • Evening: camp waterhole from dusk

When to Abandon a Waterhole and Move

  • No animals in 30 minutes AND no fresh tracks at water’s edge AND no bird activity
  • Opposite indicators: stay longer — fresh spoor, active birds, incoming dust all signal animals coming
  • Peak season rule: if another vehicle has been parked for 20+ minutes at a hole you approach, it’s worth stopping — they likely have a reason
