Getting to Etosha

Etosha from Windhoek: Best Route Options (Self-Drive vs Guided)

Getting to Etosha from Windhoek

Windhoek is the starting point for most Etosha visitors — either flying in and driving north, or beginning a road trip from the capital. The drive is well-established with good roads, and the routing decision (which gate to enter, whether to self-drive or hire a guide) shapes your entire safari experience.

Which Route to Take

Anderson Gate (Outjo route) is recommended for most visitors travelling from Windhoek. It’s slightly shorter, passes through Otjiwarongo (fuel, food) and Outjo (last supplies before park), and deposits you at Okaukuejo — the most productive first camp.

Use Von Lindequist Gate if: you’re coming from the north/east (Caprivi, Botswana), or you’re exiting east as part of a loop and returning to Windhoek from the Tsumeb/Grootfontein direction.

Guided Transfer from Windhoek

Operator-organised transfers from Windhoek to Etosha are available in three formats:

  • Shuttle transfer: Shared vehicle to park gate; clients self-drive inside
  • Driver transfer: Driver gets you to your camp; you self-drive inside
  • Guided safari from Windhoek: Guide accompanies throughout; drives inside the park

The guided safari option is most relevant for visitors who want an expert in the vehicle throughout — particularly valuable for first-timers who haven’t done African wildlife spotting before and want help reading the bush.
