Etosha National Park

Okaukuejo vs Halali vs Namutoni: Which Etosha Camp to Choose

Okaukuejo, Halali and Namutoni are the three main NWR rest camps inside Etosha. Okaukuejo (south-central, near Anderson Gate) has the famous floodlit rhino waterhole and is the park headquarters. Halali (central, midway between the other two) has a quieter Moringa waterhole and is best for leopard and families. Namutoni (east, near Von Lindequist Gate) is built around the 1902 German fort and is closest to the birding-rich Fischer’s Pan.

Okaukuejo in detail

Okaukuejo is the largest and busiest camp. The floodlit waterhole (lit until 10 PM) is the main draw — few places in Africa offer reliable nightly black rhino viewing from a benched hide. Facilities include restaurant, shop, fuel, pool, ATM (unreliable), Wi-Fi (paid). Camping sites can be tight in peak season. Best for 1-2 nights of your itinerary.

Halali in detail

Halali feels more relaxed and less packed. The Moringa waterhole sits on a slight elevation and is quieter in atmosphere — excellent for leopard (resident male has been reliable for years) and black rhino most nights. Halali has fuel, shop, restaurant and pool. Better for families wanting a quieter base.

Namutoni in detail

Namutoni wraps around a whitewashed German colonial fort (built 1902) that now houses a small museum and heritage-style rooms. The camp waterhole is less dramatic but the camp’s position near Fischer’s Pan and the Andoni Plain means you can access some of Etosha’s best birding. Fuel, shop, restaurant and pool.

How to mix them

A common 4-night itinerary is: Night 1-2 Okaukuejo (for the rhino), Night 3 Halali (for the leopard and to shorten drives between east and west), Night 4 Namutoni (for the birding and historical ambience). Drive distances: Okaukuejo-Halali 70 km (1.5h), Halali-Namutoni 75 km (1.5h).
