Etosha Deep 5-Day Safari

The 5-Day Etosha Deep Dive: Full Park Coverage

Five days (4 nights) in Etosha is the wildlife enthusiast’s ideal. You cover the complete park west-to-east, spend multiple sessions at each camp’s waterhole, do at least two night drives, and have time to sit and wait rather than constantly moving. This is how serious game-viewing is done in Etosha.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Windhoek → Okaukuejo

  • Depart Windhoek 07:00 via B1 north
  • Fuel and supplies in Outjo (~13:00)
  • Enter Anderson Gate and drive to Okaukuejo
  • Afternoon circuit: Ombika → Rietfontein loop
  • Sunset at waterhole; floodlit waterhole viewing after dinner
  • Book night drives for Days 2 and 4 at reception

Day 2: Full Western Etosha

  • Gate opening to Okaukuejo: sunrise waterhole session
  • Full western loop: Gemsbokvlakte → Sueda → Salvadora → Ondongab (120 km)
  • Rest at camp 11:30–14:30
  • Afternoon: Ombika → Rietfontein → Okaukuejo waterhole
  • Evening: NWR guided night drive (pre-booked)

Day 3: Okaukuejo → Halali (Full Day)

  • Early morning western circuit (different routes from Day 2)
  • Transfer to Halali via productive central waterholes: Salvadora → Charitsaub → Halali
  • Afternoon: Halali waterhole and surrounds
  • Evening: Halali floodlit waterhole — excellent leopard opportunity

Day 4: Halali → Fischer’s Pan → Namutoni

  • Morning: Goas → Fischer’s Pan loop (open pans; flamingos in season)
  • Pan rim road: Chudob → Tsumasa → Ngobib → Klein Namutoni
  • Afternoon: Check into Namutoni; fort exploration
  • Evening: NWR night drive from Namutoni (pre-booked)

Day 5: Eastern Plains and Departure

  • Sunrise: Eastern plains circuit (Twee Palms → Batia → Ngobib — prime cheetah territory)
  • Exit Von Lindequist Gate by 10:00
  • Drive to Tsumeb or Grootfontein; lunch stop
  • Optional: Hoba Meteorite (world’s largest, near Grootfontein)
  • Continue south toward Windhoek (arrive evening)

What Makes 5 Days Different

  • Patience pays: Multiple sessions at the same waterhole often reveal different animals each time
  • Two night drives: Night drives at two different camps (Okaukuejo and Namutoni) offer entirely different species profiles
  • No rushing: 5 days allows you to sit for an hour at a productive waterhole without checking your watch
  • Multiple encounters: You’ll often see the same lion pride twice — once moving in the morning, once at the waterhole at dusk
