A clear, sequential planning calendar for organising your Etosha safari — from first research through to the day you enter the park.

9–12 Months Before Travel

• Research best season for your priorities (wildlife density vs flamingo vs comfort)
• Establish rough date range and trip duration (3 nights minimum; 4–5 ideal)
• Check school holidays if travelling with children
• Start airfare research — international flights to Windhoek (WDH) via Johannesburg

6–8 Months Before Travel

• Book international flights — fares typically lowest this far in advance
• Create NWR account at nwr.com.na — required before any camp booking
• Book Onkoshi immediately if desired — only 15 chalets; books out fastest
• Book remaining NWR inside camps in sequence (e.g., Okaukuejo → Halali → Namutoni)
• Purchase travel insurance — do this soon after booking flights

4–6 Months Before Travel

• Book vehicle hire from Windhoek — 4×4 campervans and popular models book out early
• Book any outside lodge or private reserve nights if including
• Confirm all NWR bookings by reviewing confirmation emails
• Research visa requirements — most Western passports enter Namibia visa-free for 90 days

2–3 Months Before Travel

• Medical consultation if travelling in wet season: malaria prophylaxis discussion
• Start vaccine review — Hepatitis A, typhoid for Africa travel generally
• Download offline maps (Maps.me or OsmAnd with Namibia/Etosha roads)
• Research specific waterhole strategies for your travel month

4–6 Weeks Before Travel

• Purchase binoculars if you don’t own good ones (8×42 minimum)
• Sort photography gear: lens, batteries, memory cards, bean bag
• Begin packing list; identify clothing gaps for your season
• Confirm vehicle hire pickup details and time

1–2 Weeks Before Travel

• Print all NWR booking confirmations (physical copies required at gate)
• Check current gate opening times for your travel month (nwr.com.na)
• Withdraw or organise NAD cash — ATMs available in Windhoek and Outjo
• Check tyre and spare for rental vehicle on pickup day
• Confirm all accommodation by email

Day Before Entering the Park

• Complete Windhoek shopping: food, water, sunscreen, any missing gear
• Fill fuel in Windhoek (full tank for the B1 north drive)
• Check route to Anderson Gate or Von Lindequist Gate
• Set alarm — early departure from Windhoek means more time in the park on day 1

Day 1: Entry Day

• Depart Windhoek by 06:00–07:00
• Stop Outjo (~3.5 hrs): fuel, ATM, final food purchases (Pick n Pay)
• Anderson Gate (~4.5 hrs from Windhoek): present passports + NWR confirmation; pay entry fees
• Drive to Okaukuejo (17 km inside): first game drive begins immediately
