- Location: 1 km from King Nehale Gate, Etosha’s northern entrance, on the Andoni plains
- Property size: 40 bungalows (26 twin, 14 family), every one with a private plunge pool
- From: NAD 3,625 per person sharing, bed & breakfast (valid to 31 October 2026)
- Mandatory levy: none — Etosha park entry fees are paid separately at the gate
- Best for: the northern route between Etosha and the Owambo regions or Caprivi, with exclusive waterhole access
Etosha King Nehale is the only lodge at Etosha’s northern entrance. It stands on the open Andoni plains just 1 km from King Nehale Gate, north of the park, and is part of the Gondwana Collection.
Two things set it apart from every other Etosha lodge. First, all 40 bungalows have their own private plunge pool. Second, guests get exclusive access to Ontalelo Outpost, a private waterhole inside the park that no other lodge can visit.
Why stay at Etosha King Nehale
- Your own plunge pool. Every bungalow, twin and family alike, has a private plunge pool on the veranda. Northern Etosha is hot; this is the only lodge in the area where cooling off never means sharing.
- Exclusive Ontalelo waterhole. The lodge’s private outpost overlooks a waterhole on the Andoni plain inside the park, reserved for King Nehale guests on a guided excursion.
- The uncrowded end of Etosha. The Andoni grasslands near the gate draw big herds and open-country species, and you will meet a fraction of the vehicles found around Okaukuejo.
- A genuinely Owambo lodge. The main building is shaped like the head of an Nguni cow, with the rows of bungalows sweeping out like horns. Fabrics, cutlery and even table engravings carry Oshiwambo proverbs and patterns.
Accommodation at Etosha King Nehale
The 40 bungalows comprise 26 twin rooms and 14 family rooms. Family units have a double bed plus a sleeper couch for children under 13, so a family of four fits in one bungalow.
Each bungalow is air-conditioned with a ceiling fan, en-suite bathroom, fridge, hairdryer, mosquito nets and a private veranda with its plunge pool. Interiors are bold and contemporary, with colourwork and detailing drawn from the surrounding Owambo culture rather than the usual safari beige.
The Ontalelo waterhole excursion
Ontalelo Outpost is the lodge’s signature experience: a private waterhole viewpoint inside Etosha National Park, accessible only to King Nehale guests. The guided excursion costs NAD 1,500 per person.
Because access is exclusive, you watch elephant, giraffe and plains game come to drink without another vehicle in sight. In the dry months the Andoni plain funnels wildlife to water, and sessions at the outpost can be spectacular.
Activities from Etosha King Nehale
- Ontalelo waterhole excursion — NAD 1,500 per person, exclusive to lodge guests.
- Half-day Etosha game drive — NAD 990 per person, entering through King Nehale Gate onto the Andoni plains and towards the Fischer’s Pan area.
- Full-day Etosha game drive — NAD 1,300 per person, a roughly 9-hour route reaching deeper into the park; park entry fees excluded.
- Ondjumba cultural village tour — NAD 1,185 per person. A guided visit to a nearby Owambo homestead, covering daily life, mahangu farming and local food. Few Etosha lodges offer any cultural programme; this one is on the doorstep of the culture it draws on.
- Guided walk — NAD 445 per person, 1–2 hours around the lodge grounds and plains.
Self-drivers can enter at King Nehale Gate and exit at Von Lindequist or Andersson’s Gate the same day, which makes the lodge a natural one-way pivot through the park.

Who Etosha King Nehale suits
This lodge is made for travellers routing north: Etosha to Ruacana and the Kunene, or east through Owamboland towards the Zambezi Region. It turns what used to be a transit day into a highlight, and the plunge pools give it real honeymoon appeal at a mid-range price.
Families settle in well thanks to the 14 family bungalows, free stays for under-6s and half rate for ages 6–13. If your whole itinerary sits in southern Etosha, its sister lodges at Andersson’s Gate are the more practical Gondwana bases.
Getting to Etosha King Nehale
The lodge is 1 km from King Nehale Gate on the park’s northern boundary, reached on tar via the B1 through Ondangwa or from the Oshivelo side. It is the closest lodge to any Etosha gate that we list.
Coming from the south, many guests drive through the park itself: enter at Von Lindequist or Andersson’s Gate in the morning, game-view northwards past Namutoni and the Andoni plains, and exit at King Nehale Gate before sunset. Gate hours and routes are in our park gates guide.
Frequently asked questions about Etosha King Nehale
Where exactly is Etosha King Nehale?
On the Andoni plains just north of Etosha National Park, 1 km from King Nehale Gate. It is the only lodge at the park’s northern entrance, about two hours’ game-drive north of Namutoni.
How much does Etosha King Nehale cost in 2026?
NAD 3,625 per person sharing, bed and breakfast, valid to 31 October 2026. Children under 6 stay free and ages 6–13 pay half rate. Dinner, park fees and activities such as the Ontalelo excursion (NAD 1,500) are extra.
Do all rooms really have a private plunge pool?
Yes. All 40 bungalows, including the family units, have a private plunge pool on the veranda, plus air conditioning, a ceiling fan and a fridge.
Is the Ontalelo waterhole worth it?
In the dry season, yes. It is a private waterhole inside the park that only King Nehale guests may visit, so sightings come without any other vehicles. At NAD 1,500 per person we suggest it as your sundowner activity on the first evening.
Does a stay here work in a self-drive itinerary?
Very well. The classic pattern is two nights in southern or eastern Etosha, then a full game-viewing day driving north through the park to exit at King Nehale Gate, one or two nights here, and onward to the Kunene or Zambezi regions.
