  • From: NAD 1,980 per person sharing, bed & breakfast (valid to 31 October 2026)

  • Best for: budget-conscious travellers who still want atmosphere and a pool

Etosha Safari Camp is the most affordable lodge-style stay on the southern side of Etosha National Park. It is part of the Gondwana Collection and sits in mopane woodland 10 km from Andersson’s Gate, close enough to be at the park entrance shortly after it opens.

Its defining feature is character. Where many gate-side properties feel generic, this camp is built around a township-shebeen theme: the Oshebeena bar, the Okambashu restaurant (the name means “our home”) and live music from the resident Etosha Boys in the courtyard most evenings.

Why stay at Etosha Safari Camp

  • The lowest chalet rate near Andersson’s Gate. At NAD 1,980 per person sharing with breakfast, it undercuts almost every walled-and-roofed option this close to the southern entrance.
  • Genuine personality. The Oshebeena bar recreates the feel of an informal Namibian shebeen, with local décor, recycled signage and live music. It is a fun contrast to a long, dusty day of game viewing.
  • Ten minutes from the gate. You lose almost no game-viewing time to the commute, and you can pop out of the park for lunch if you prefer.
  • Family-friendly pricing. Children under 6 stay free and ages 6–13 pay half the adult rate, which matters on a multi-night Etosha stay.

Accommodation at Etosha Safari Camp

The 50 chalets stand among mopane trees a short walk from the main area. The split is 37 twin chalets, 3 triple chalets and 10 family chalets; the family units sleep two adults plus two children under 13 on a double bunk.

Every chalet has an en-suite bathroom with shower, air conditioning, mosquito nets, tea and coffee facilities and a small veranda. These are simple, clean rooms rather than luxury suites, and that is exactly what the rate reflects.

There is also a campsite on the property for self-sufficient travellers. Camping rates are not on the current published sheet, so ask us when you enquire and we will confirm them with the lodge.

The Oshebeena bar and Okambashu restaurant

The heart of the camp is its social area. Okambashu serves buffet-style dinners with Namibian dishes alongside familiar options, and the Oshebeena bar pours cold Windhoek Lager under strings of township-style memorabilia.

On most evenings the Etosha Boys play live in the courtyard. Add a circular cold-water pool for the midday heat and you have one of the most sociable lodge atmospheres anywhere around the park.

Activities from Etosha Safari Camp

Gondwana runs a shared activity programme from both of its Andersson’s Gate properties. Guided game drives enter Etosha through Andersson’s Gate in open safari vehicles, with guides who work this side of the park daily.

  • Half-day Etosha game drive — NAD 990 per person. Departs around sunrise (an afternoon departure also runs), roughly 5–6 hours covering the Okaukuejo area waterholes.
  • Full-day Etosha game drive — NAD 1,300 per person. About 9 hours, reaching deeper into the park towards Halali. Park entry fees are excluded.
  • Guided walk — NAD 445 per person. A 1–2 hour, 2–3.5 km walk through the mopane woodland around the camp, morning or afternoon.

Most guests here self-drive, and the camp works perfectly as a base for that: fuel and park permits are handled at Okaukuejo once you are inside.

Who Etosha Safari Camp suits

This is our first recommendation for travellers watching the budget who still want a proper lodge experience: a bar, a pool, cooked breakfasts and a bit of theatre in the evenings. Families do well here too, thanks to the dedicated family chalets and the under-6-free, 6–13-half-rate child policy.

If you want silence, hilltop views and more space, its sister property Etosha Safari Lodge is two minutes up the road at a higher rate. Honeymooners and photographers chasing exclusivity should look at the private reserves instead.

Getting to Etosha Safari Camp

The camp lies just off the C38, 10 km south of Andersson’s Gate. From Windhoek it is roughly 400 km: take the B1 north to Otjiwarongo and Outjo, then the C38 towards the park. The entire route is tarred, and a normal sedan manages it comfortably.

Arriving from Swakopmund, most travellers come via Outjo as well. See our Etosha park gates guide for gate opening hours, which follow sunrise and sunset.

Frequently asked questions about Etosha Safari Camp

How far is Etosha Safari Camp from Etosha National Park?

10 km from Andersson’s Gate, the park’s main southern entrance. That is about a 10-minute drive on tar, and roughly 17 km further to Okaukuejo once you are inside the park.

What is the difference between Etosha Safari Camp and Etosha Safari Lodge?

They are neighbouring Gondwana properties sharing the same activity programme. The Camp is the budget option with a lively shebeen-bar atmosphere; the Lodge sits on a hilltop with panoramic views, three pools and a quieter, more upmarket feel at NAD 3,383 per person.

Do the rates include meals?

The NAD 1,980 rate includes breakfast. Dinner at the Okambashu restaurant is paid separately, and lunch packs can be arranged for early game-drive departures.

Is Etosha Safari Camp good for children?

Yes. Ten family chalets sleep two adults and two children under 13, children under 6 stay free, and ages 6–13 pay half rate. The pool and live music make evenings easy with kids.

How far in advance should I book?

For July to October, book 6–12 months ahead; with only 50 chalets at this price point, the camp fills early in high season. Shoulder months are more forgiving, but weekends still go quickly.
