Swakopmund to Etosha is the natural overland route for travellers combining the coast with safari country. The drive is 605–680 km depending on route choice, takes 7–8 hours, and crosses some of Namibia’s most cinematic landscapes — the gravel plains of Damaraland, the Erongo mountains, and the bushveld north of Outjo. This guide covers two route options, fuel stops, vehicle requirements, and side-trips worth adding.
Route A: via Karibib + Otjiwarongo (tarred, fastest)
Tarred all the way, 605 km, 7 hours. The standard route for travellers who want speed and simplicity.
- Swakopmund → Usakos: 145 km, B2 east, 1.5 hours
- Usakos → Karibib: 30 km, B2 east, 25 minutes
- Karibib → Okahandja: 145 km, B2 east, 1.5 hours
- Okahandja → Otjiwarongo: 175 km, B1 north, 2 hours
- Otjiwarongo → Outjo → Andersson Gate: 110 km + 110 km, 2 hours total
Best for: first-time visitors, families with kids, travellers in sedans, time-pressed schedules.
Route B: via Henties Bay + Uis + Khorixas (Damaraland scenic)
Mostly gravel, 680 km, 8 hours, requires 4×4 or high-clearance vehicle. The route most photographers and overland travellers prefer because it threads through Damaraland.
- Swakopmund → Henties Bay: 70 km, C34 north (coastal road), 1 hour
- Henties Bay → Uis: 130 km, C35 inland, 2 hours. First gravel section.
- Uis → Khorixas: 130 km, C35/C39, 2 hours. Through the Brandberg massif foothills.
- Khorixas → Outjo: 175 km, C39 east, 2.5 hours
- Outjo → Andersson Gate: 110 km, C38 north, 1.25 hours
Best for: photographers, overlanders, travellers adding Twyfelfontein rock-art (a 30 km detour from Khorixas), or those who want the desert-elephant landscape between Uis and Khorixas.
Fuel stops
| Town | Route A km | Route B km | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Usakos | 145 | — | 2 stations, basic shop |
| Karibib | 175 | — | Multiple stations |
| Okahandja | 320 | — | Major fuel + food stop |
| Otjiwarongo | 495 | — | Major town |
| Henties Bay | — | 70 | Last reliable station before gravel |
| Uis | — | 200 | Single station, sometimes out of stock |
| Khorixas | — | 330 | 2 stations |
| Outjo | 565 / 505 | Both | Final supermarket |
For Route B, fill up at Henties Bay AND carry a 20L jerry can for safety — Uis is reliable but not guaranteed. Khorixas always has fuel.
Side trips worth adding
- Cape Cross seal colony — 50 km north of Henties Bay on Route B. Quick 30-minute stop; one of the largest Cape fur seal colonies in Africa.
- Twyfelfontein rock engravings — 30 km west of Khorixas on Route B. UNESCO World Heritage site, ~2 hours.
- Erindi Private Game Reserve — near Omaruru on Route A. Good overnight break with own wildlife (lions, leopards, white rhino).
- Otjiwarongo Cheetah Conservation Fund — Route A, 5 km off the highway. 90-minute educational tour, supports conservation directly.
Overnight options if 7–8 hours is too much
Splitting the drive over two days with one overnight is a common pattern:
- Route A: overnight Otjiwarongo (Frans Indongo Lodge, Hadassa Hill, or town hotels) — you arrive Etosha late morning the next day with energy for an afternoon drive.
- Route B: overnight Twyfelfontein (Twyfelfontein Country Lodge) or Damaraland Camp — this is where the route really pays off; you get a full day of Damaraland time.
Vehicle requirements
- Route A: sedan is fine. 4×4 not necessary unless you’re going on to Dolomite Resort.
- Route B: 4×4 strongly recommended. The C39 between Uis and Khorixas can be corrugated and washboarded. Sedan is technically possible but uncomfortable and tyre-risky.
