Where to Save Without Compromising Experience
- Self-catering for most meals: NWR camp restaurants are 2–3× the cost of cooking your own food from Outjo/Swakopmund supplies
- Budget vehicle (dry season): Standard 2WD is adequate and cheaper than 4×4 for dry-season main roads
- Travel in shoulder season (May or Nov): NWR and outside lodge rates are 15–25% lower than peak July–August
- Skip Sossusvlei lodge; camp instead: Sesriem campsite is excellent and costs NAD 200–300 per night vs NAD 3,000–8,000 for a lodge
Where Not to Cut
- Travel insurance: Medical evacuation from Namibia without insurance = NAD 20,000–50,000 out of pocket
- Nights inside Etosha: Outside lodge accommodation for all nights loses prime wildlife windows; at least 2–3 inside nights justified
- Vehicle spare tyre: Confirm you have one; a flat tyre 80 km from assistance without a spare is a serious problem
