Etosha Rules & Regulations (Self‑Drive)

Etosha Rules & Regulations for Self-Drivers

Etosha National Park operates under a clear set of rules designed to protect both wildlife and visitors. Violations can result in fines, expulsion from the park, or — in serious cases — legal prosecution. This guide covers every rule self-drivers need to know.

Vehicle and Driving Rules

RuleRequirement

Speed limit (waterholes, picnic sites)40 km/h maximum
Night drivingProhibited — all vehicles must be inside camp by gate closing
Off-road drivingProhibited — stick to designated roads only

Wildlife Interaction Rules

  • Never exit your vehicle except at designated picnic sites and inside camp perimeters
  • Do not approach animals closer than is safe — if an animal shows distress, back away
  • Do not feed animals — this is illegal and creates dangerous habituation
  • Do not make loud noises, play music, or use flash photography near animals
  • Do not block animals’ paths to waterholes — leave a clear approach corridor
  • If a predator is hunting, remain still and do not interfere in any way

Gate and Permit Rules

  • All visitors must hold a valid permit — obtained at the gate upon payment of conservation levy
  • Permits must be kept in the vehicle and presented on request
  • You must be inside a camp or have exited the park before gate closing time
  • Late returns are punishable by fines — NWR rangers patrol actively
  • Day visitors who have not pre-booked accommodation must exit before gate closing

Camp Rules

  • Quiet hours: observe noise restrictions after 10 pm
  • Braai (BBQ) fires permitted in designated areas only
  • Do not leave food or rubbish unattended — mongoose, monkey, and jackal will take it
  • Pets are not permitted anywhere inside the park
  • Walking within camp is permitted — follow signposted paths and do not approach the perimeter fence near wildlife
  • Waterholes within camps may be visited on foot via the designated viewing platforms after dark

Environmental Rules

  • No littering anywhere in the park — fines apply
  • No collection of plants, rocks, feathers, or any natural material
  • No drones or remote-controlled aircraft inside the park
  • Fires may only be lit in designated braai areas — no open fires outside these zones
  • No washing of vehicles, equipment, or clothing in natural waterholes

Alcohol Rules

  • Drinking alcohol while driving inside the park is prohibited (Namibia DUI laws apply)
  • Alcohol may be brought into the park and consumed in camp
  • Etosha camp restaurants serve alcohol
  • Public intoxication in the park is not tolerated

Photography Rules

  • Personal photography is freely permitted from vehicles
  • Commercial photography requires a separate permit from the Ministry of Environment
  • Drones are prohibited (see environmental rules)
  • Flash photography at night waterholes is discouraged — it disturbs animals
