Etosha National Park operates under a clear set of rules designed to protect both wildlife and visitors. Violations can result in fines, expulsion from the park, or — in serious cases — legal prosecution. This guide covers every rule self-drivers need to know.

Gate and Permit Rules
All visitors must hold a valid permit — obtained at the gate upon payment of conservation levy
Permits must be kept in the vehicle and presented on request
You must be inside a camp or have exited the park before gate closing time
Late returns are punishable by fines — NWR rangers patrol actively
Day visitors who have not pre-booked accommodation must exit before gate closing
